Checking Windshield

It is such a pain when you get a rock chip or a crack in your windshield! Sometimes, it can be difficult to know when you can get your windshield repaired or if you need to have your windshield replaced. A windshield repair is less expensive than a replacement and preferred by auto insurance companies when it is possible. Below is some guidance for windshield repair versus replacement.

If you get a rock chip in your windshield that is smaller than the size of a quarter, then you can usually get a windshield repair, depending on its location. The sooner you can have the rock chip looked at and repaired, the better it will be for you. Rock chips can quickly turn into cracks in hot and cold weather and even during a car wash. If the rock chip is on the driver’s side and in a place where it could impair the driver’s view, the windshield may need to be replaced.

Windshield replacement is needed if there is a crack longer than a dollar bill. You will also need to replace your windshield if the crack is on the driver’s side of the vehicle where it could affect the driver’s view. Cracks can make it more difficult for driver’s to see at night and in rain, so it is best to get a new windshield as soon as possible. Another case where windshield replacement is needed as quickly as possible is if something causes significant damage to your windshield. This kind of damage compromises the entire windshield, so it could lead to more extensive problems, depending on the amount of damage incurred.
